Reducing Heating Expenses

From March to November in southern Wisconsin and Minnesota a single 30’ x 96’ high tunnel typically requires 500 gallons of fuel oil per year.  At $3 per gallon for #2 fuel oil, that translates into annual heating costs of around $1500 per tunnel or roughly $21,000 for an acre of tunnels.  Once financial payback is achieved, the solar thermal system provides virtually free auxiliary heating, with the exception of minimal maintenance costs.
