Healthier Choices
Seeking Produce Closer to Home

Educational researchers have long noted the connection between children's nutrition and their educational performance.  School districts, prompted by state and federal nutritional guidelines, have begun to reach out to local farms for fresh fruits and vegetables.   At the federal level, the voluntary HealthierUS Schools Challenge Program “establishes rigorous standards for schools' food quality, participation in meal programs, and nutrition education.”

Non-profit organizations are also attempting to bringing healthier food into the school lunchroom.  The Farm to School program is a diverse group of regional programs that connect schools and local farms.  Its objective is to serve healthy meals in school cafeterias, improve student nutrition, provide agriculture, health and nutrition education opportunities, and support local and regional farmers.  There are currently 9,714 schools in 46 states involved in the Farm to School Program.
